Workshop "Offshore Studies of the Andaman-Sumatra-Earthquakes"
Hanover, 22nd-23rd May, 2006
Hanover, 31st May, 2006
Outcome and results
The workshop "offshore studies of the Andaman-Sumatran-Earthquakes" was conducted at the Federal
Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), in Hanover from 22nd to 23rd May, 2006.
Fifty participants from Australia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Norway, UK and
the US attended the workshop. Nearly all groups being recently active offshore Sumatra were
represented during the workshop. Overviews and results of research cruises already carried
out were given in oral and poster presentations on Monday. On Tuesday social aspects and
tsunami hazard mitigation presentations were given followed by future research plans offshore
Sumatra. A general discussion on issues such as how to enhance cooperation between the working
groups offshore Sumatra followed. Here are the main outcomes of this discussion and the workshop in general.
1. Compilation of a location map
To avoid duplicate studies and to effectively plan future research cruises it was
agreed to compile a map of cruise track data (eg. bathymetry, MCS lines) and station
locations (eg. OBS, OBH positions). These data may also include planned surveys and
station positions. The data will be provided voluntarily and the type and amount of
the data remains up to the providing institution. The following organizations and
institutions confirmed to provide relevant data and appointed following contact persons:

The data will be collected and compiled by Frauke Klinqelhoefer (IFREMER) (Thank you Frauke for this).
A first map compilation needs to be prepared before the upcoming cruise with the Marion Dufresne in July 2006.
Thus a first deadline for data submission to Frauke is the 15th June. 2006. The data should be delivered in
tabular form in ascii-tables or other spreadsheet format.
Frauke suggested to distribute the map compilation as Postscript, PDF or GeoTiff file, for easy georeferenced
registration of the map in CIS or navigation programs.
Future updates of the survey data as more cruises will have been conducted should also be sent to Frauke.
2. Meta database
In context of the map compilation it has been suggested to build up a meta database. Tim Henstock offered
to host such a database at the NOC in Southampton. Another opinion was to use the InterMARGINS platform for
this. However, the need for such a database at this stage as well as what kind of data it should hold was
critically discussed. The decision to build up such a meta database has been postponed.
3. Mailing list
It has been suggested to build up a mailing list for the Sumatra Workshop participants and further
interested persons. As a start I provide the list of participants given in the workshop "program and
abstracts" report (attached as PDF). A central location for maintaining this list needs to be determined.
For the moment I offer to maintain this list. Therefore please let me know of email addresses to be added to the mailing list.
4. Working group
A big majority of the workshop participants agreed to establish a Sumatra working group.
Lisa McNeill (NOC, UK) and me, Stefan Ladage (BGR, Germany), have been appointed as representatives to
arrange and establish this working group in the frame of InterMARGINS.
5. Joint publication
It has been proposed to jointly publish scientific results in a special issue of a major journal.
Tectonophysics, Marine Geology or G-cubed had been suggested. It was critically remarked that the
timing of preparation of the manuscripts is difficult, because some of the working groups are already
preparing manuscripts, while others did not yet conduct their research cruises. However, in general
the idea to publish jointly in a special issue has been welcomed. Therefore, it was decided that
Dave Tappin holds responsible for contacting the editors of the journals and keeping track on the issue of
joint publication. If you think you would like to contribute to such a special issue, please get in contact with Dave.
6. Bathymetric map compilation
It has been suggested to generate a compilation of the bathymetric data sets offshore Sumatra.
A first step has been made by the BGR, IFM-GEOMAR and JAMSTEC on a bilateral basis (Germany - Japan).
However, details for the next steps could not been clarified. A major issue was the availability of
other data sets, eg. the HMS Scott data. The whole topic therefore needs to be addressed during the next workshop again.
7. AGU Fall Meeting 2006
It was agreed upon to have a Union Session at the AGU Fall Meeting, SF, 2006. :
Dave Tappin and me will propose a session "The Great Sumatran Earthquake and Tsunami: Two years after".
8. Next meeting
It was agreed upon to have a follow up workshop next year (2007), around the same time of year (May/June).
Lisa McNeill kindly offered to host and organize the workshop at NOC in Southhampton.
We, that is Dave and me, hope that it has been a successful workshop for you.
We believe that we all have achieved quite a progress in cooperation and coordination of our work
offshore Sumatra and we hope that future research and upcoming workshops will profit by the outcome of
this workshop. For those of you who have not received a "
program and abstracts" volume, please contact
me and I will send one to you. Also find it attached as PDF file.
Yours
Stefan Ladage and Dave Tappin
