Sumatran earthquake and tsunami - scientific co-ordination
We will all have been shocked by the destruction caused by the recent
2004 December 26 earthquake off Sumatra
and by the subsequent tsunami(s) yet perhaps we felt powerless as
scientists, who well understand the forces
and Earth processes involved, to do anything constructive to help.
In response to these concerns it now appears that a number of
scientists internationally are beginning to
plan research investigations and cruises to the area of the epicentre.
Therefore, InterMARGINS is pleased to announce that it offers to
co-ordinate and act as an informal clearing
house for at least 12 months for all information regarding research
projects at sea off northwestern Indonesia,
the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands.
If it would be helpful, InterMARGINS could also include relevant
scientific investigations on land wherever
the tsunami caused serious damage or loss of life.
The objective is to avoid wasteful duplication but also to encourage
and enable co-operation internationally
where appropriate.
Such actions fall precisely within the remit of InterMARGINS as stated
in its Constitution
and seem to be a very appropriate role for InterMARGINS to play.
Please alert colleagues, research managers, funding organisations or
ship operators in your country
who may be involved in planning cruises or investigations to the areas
mentioned above.
Any information that you wish to share should be sent by email to

will be posted on the InterMARGINS web site - here.
Thank you for your help.
