3 Weeks
Hydrographic/SPM
survey: Neil Brown MKIIIC CTD + nephelometer + Rosette sampler,
vessel-mounted ADCP current profiler
Short-term moorings: ADCPs with wave module, LISST sediment size sensor
Other: Sidescan sonar, sub-bottom, Sparker
Superficial grab sampler, gravity corer, vibrocorer
Sub-surface pump + SPM filtering system.
To invesitgate the Nazare Canyon dynamics, associated present day
sedimentary processes and impacts on
the circulation and sediment distribution on the N Portuguese
continental margin by combining CTD/ADCP/SPM
measurements and numerical models (MOCASSIM system).
Also to investigate sedimentary structures in the continental
shelf/slope near the canyon head
using sidescan sonar, high resolution seismics and coring.

Currentmeters,
ADCP, LISST.
Calibration and testing of equipment to be moored in the Nazare Canyon
area.
Short deployment (2 days) of moorings and CORSED platform in Setubal
Bay area for testing and
intercomparison of currentmeters, ADCP and LISST to be deployed later
in the Nazare Canyon. .
13th May 2004
14th May 2004
2 Days
- Deployment of the two long-term moorings at the
following positions along the Nazare Canyon axis:
- Mooring A (bottom depth 3230m) Lat: 39 deg 30 min
3.919 sec North; Long: 9 deg 52 min 5.319 sec West
- Mooring B (bottom depth 1600m) Lat: 39 deg 31 min
21.619 sec North; Long: 9 deg 32 min 48.292 sec West
-
- Deployment of CORSED monitoring platform (for a
short-term period of observations) at the following position over the
shelf:
- CORSED (bottom depth: 103m) Lat: 39 deg 28.250
min North, 9 deg 26.916 min West.
The platform is equipped with:
- 1 upward looking 300 KHz ADCP at 1 meters
above the bottom
- 1 downward looking 1200 KHz ADCP at 5 meters
above the bottom
- 1 LISST at 3 meters above the bottom
- 1 RCM9 currentmeter (with nephelometer) at 5
meters above the bottom
- 1 RCM9 currentmeter (with nephelometer) at 1
meter above the bottom

Multidisciplinary cruise in the Nazare Canyon area. Data collected
during the cruise includes:
- 104 CTD casts
- Water samples
- On-board ADCP
- Meteorological measurements
25 May 2004
28th May 2004
4 Days
- Bottom sediment sampling of the Nazare Canyon area.
108 samples collected with Smith McIntyre.
- Recovering of CORSED monitoring platform. First
analysis of the data indicates that all equipment provided good data
during the deployment period (14-28 May)
