Scientific objectives :    MEDIFLUX (2003-2006) is an integrated interdisciplinary investigation of fluid seeps and mud volcanoes on the Nile Deep Sea Fan. Although funded by national funding agencies (NWO in the Netherlands) it is part of the ESF promoted EUROMARGINS programme. MEDIFLUX is coordinated in France by Jean-Paul Foucher (Ifremer) and involves French, Dutch, and German researchers. The first of three expeditions to the region (NAUTINIL, 2003) used the French submersible Nautile operated from research vessel L'Atalante for detailed study and sampling of the seeps and mud volcanoes. The second expedition (MIMES, 2004) used the Dutch research vessel Pelagia and the German deep tow sidescan sonar and subbottom profiler system DTS-1 to study the geophysical signature of the seeps and mud volcanoes.
