Scientific objectives :    Cruise SO179 started on Sept. 16 in Jakarta, Indonesia. 22 Scientists forming an international group boarded the vessel. The main objective of this cruise was the recovery of instruments deployed on SO176 and subsequent active refraction seismic profiling off central Java. Gravity and bathymetry measurements were conducted permanently; magnetic data was collected along selected seismic profiles. Altogether, 4 seismic profiles where shot with a maximum of 23 ocean bottom instruments deployed per profile (seismometers and hydrophones). Two lines were especially designed for the seismological networks (on- and offshore), while the other two were dip lines extending from the incoming plate close to the coastline to investigate the crustal structure of the Java margin. Altogether, 75 OBH/S were deployed and airgun shots were fired along app. 1000 profile kilometres. Simultaneously, a 4 channel streamer was towed for additional profiling. Refraction data quality is good on average, with offsets of up to 300 km. SONNE arrived at Cilacap on Oct. 7, 2004.
