Scientific objectives :   The Izu-Bonin volcanic arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic convergent margin. The origin of rhyolite in oceanic arcs is a matter of considerable interest. Petrological and geophysical study of the submarine parts of individual volcanoes will give us underwater perspectives, which complements magma genesis models obtained from subaereal volcanoes.
