Location :   Izu-Bonin Arc

Research ship and cruise identifier :   Kairei

Sails :   10 December 2002 from Yokosuka, Japan

Docks :   27 December 2002 in Yokosuka, Japan

Principal Scientist/Investigator :   Y. Tamura

Scientific objectives :   Modern magmatism at the northern Izu-Bonin arc is bimodal with basalt and rhyolite predominating. Using the submersible Shinkai 2000 for sampling and direct observation, we will study the Sumisu and Kaikata Calderas, two of such bimodal volcanoes, to elucidate the origin of rhyolite in oceanic arcs.
